Understanding the ins and outs of skincare isn’t just for women. Today, more and more men are realizing the importance of maintaining a healthy skin routine. This Men’s Health Month, our very own Tara A. Oetken, MD, is shining a light on men’s skincare and sharing key steps to achieving a fresh, rejuvenated complexion.

Understanding Men’s Skin

A man’s skin differs in several significant ways from a woman’s. It tends to be thicker, oilier and boasts a higher collagen density — making it less prone to wrinkles and signs of aging. But these advantages don’t come without their own unique set of challenges, such as increased risks of acne, rosacea, razor bumps, and enlarged pores.

Your Essential Men’s Skincare Routine

Luckily, maintaining a healthy, vibrant complexion can be achieved in just five simple steps.

1. Cleansing

The foundation of any effective skincare routine is a proper cleansing regimen. Use a gentle facial cleanser suited for your skin type to remove dirt, excess oil, and impurities. Cleansing should be done twice a day, in the morning and before bedtime, to keep the skin clean and prevent clogged pores.

2. Exfoliation

Exfoliation is a key step in men’s skincare that often gets overlooked. Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and promote cell turnover. Dr. Oetken’s favorite exfoliant is SkinMedica’s AHA/BHA facewash. Used 2-3 times weekly, this gentle scrub helps reveal a smoother and brighter complexion.

3. Shaving and Aftershave

For men who shave regularly, proper shaving techniques are vital. Always use a sharp razor blade, lubricate the skin with shaving cream or gel, and shave in the direction of hair growth to minimize irritation and razor bumps. After shaving, apply an alcohol-free aftershave balm or lotion to soothe the skin and provide hydration.

4. Moisturizing

Moisturizing is essential for all skin types, including men’s skin. It helps replenish moisture, improve skin elasticity, and create a protective barrier against environmental damage. Look for a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that suits your skin type and contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin for optimal hydration.

5. Sun Protection

Sunscreen is not just for beach days. Daily sun protection is crucial to prevent premature aging, sunburns, and even skin cancer. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it generously to all exposed areas, including the face, neck, and ears.

If you have specific skin concerns like acne, dark spots, or signs of aging, consider incorporating targeted treatments into your skincare routine. Products containing ingredients such as salicylic acid, retinol, or vitamin C can address these issues effectively.
