There are many reasons why someone may have an enlarged labia, including:

  • Childbirth
  • Aging
  • Sexual activity
  • Genetics

Females who suffer from an enlarged labia tend to have difficulty with exercise, hygiene, urinary tract infections (UTI), and sexual activity.

Your Consultation

Dr. Tarak H. Patel at Cascade Eye & Skin Centers will evaluate your current physical health and surgical goals at your initial labiaplasty consultation. Together, you will devise a customized plan to achieve your desired outcome. Dr. Patel is dedicated to providing his patients with high quality, individualized care throughout the entire surgical process, beginning at the initial consultation.

Labiaplasty Potential Complications

Although a labiaplasty is a safe, cosmetic procedure, there are some possible risks and complications associated with any surgical treatment.

  • Hematomas
  • Asymmetry between labia majora and labia minora
  • Infection
  • Reduced sensitivity in the area
  • Excessive bleeding
  • An allergic reaction to the anesthetic
  • Scarring

What to Expect During Your Labiaplasty Procedure

A labiaplasty typically takes place under general anesthesia or a local anesthetic with sedation. Typically, the patient is first given a topical cream of injection to numb the area, as well as an intravenous drip to make sure they remain hydrated during the procedure.

In order for the incisions on either side of the vaginal opening to be accurate, patients are required to have a pre-operative evaluation that includes diagnostic images. Incisions can be made with a scalpel, scissors, or a laser. After the labia minora has been reduced, the incisions are sutured together using fine, dissolvable stitches. The entire procedure normally takes about one to two hours.

Labiaplasty Recovery

Recovery time for this procedure tends to take up to two weeks. During the recovery process, it is important to listen to Dr. Patel’s specific instructions, as well as to:

  • Keep the area clean
  • Wear loose-fitting undergarments and clothing
  • Avoid sexual activity for six weeks
  • Avoid physical activity for six to 12 weeks
  • Use sanitary towels instead of tampons for at least four weeks

Patients should expect swelling, soreness, and bruising following the procedure. During this time, peeing and sitting may also cause discomfort, which can be alleviated with pain medications prescribed by Dr. Patel.
