Glaucoma and Its Treatment
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases where the optic nerve becomes progressively damaged. After cataracts, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Risk factors include high eye pressure, family history, advanced age, black race, and thin corneas among others.
In the United States, glaucoma treatment generally involves the use of eye drops to reduce eye pressure. A laser treatment known as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a new way to treat glaucoma advised when drops alone are not adequate to reduce eye pressure. In some cases, SLT is used as a first line of glaucoma treatment for Cascade patients in University Place / Tacoma, Olympia and the Puyallup-areas.
When drop and laser treatments fail to control eye pressure, surgical treatment for glaucoma is required. Cascade surgeons are skilled in glaucoma drainage procedures such as trabeculectomy and seton (tube) placement. These procedures are offered to University Place / Tacoma, Olympia and Puyallup-area patients when these sight saving surgeries become necessary.
