Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than one million skin cancers diagnosed every year. People with the highest risk for melanoma include those with a high number of moles, with light colored hair, skin and eyes, those who tan with difficulty and burn in the sun and those with a history of skin cancer in two or more family members. A person’s risk for skin cancer doubles if they have had five or more sunburns. Occasional use of tanning beds almost triples the chance of developing melanoma.
Skin Cancer Prevention Tips:
* Use a broad spectrum sunscreen, which filters both UVA and UVB rays.
* Avoid the midday sun (from mid-morning to late afternoon) whenever you can.
* Wear long sleeves and long pants of tightly woven fabrics, a hat with a wide brim and sunglasses tha absorb UV.
* Stay away from sunlamps and tanning booths!
* If you have a suspicious mole, see a dermatologist!
Don’t forget your lips! Lips are often overlooked when exfoliating. Gently massage them with a damp towel or run your toothbrush over your lips to slough off any dry skin. This will allow your lipstick to glide on without caking.
